Kartini (2017)

This film tells the true story of Kartini's struggle, the most popular female hero in Indonesia. In early 1900s Indonesia, women were not allowed to receive higher education, even among the nobility. Javanese noblewomen were expected to become Raden Ayu and marry a nobleman. Kartini grew up witnessing how her own mother, Ngasirah, was marginalized in her own home, considered a servant simply because she lacked noble blood. Her father, Raden Sosroningrat, who loved Kartini and her family dearly, was also powerless against the traditions of the time. Throughout her life, Kartini fought for equality and education rights for all, especially for women. Together with her sisters, Roekmini and Kardinah, Kartini established schools for the underprivileged and created job opportunities for the people of Jepara and surrounding areas. The film Kartini chronicles the emotional journey of Kartini as she defied sacred traditions and even opposed her own family to advocate for equal rights for all people in Indonesia.
